R is for Racism
“Researchers have been more successful at identifying racial and ethnic disparities than preventing and eliminating these disparities.”* 💡 Read that again. If this is true, how do we stop racism in the workplace? Or racism in schools? Or racism in sport?
I recently went searching for evidence-backed methods for reducing bias and racism. Interestingly, there is not a lot. Sure, there are a lot of proposed solutions, training programs and other interventions – but there is a gap and a lack of research studies to prove long-term change in bias and/or racism from these programs.
Where does that leave us? 🤔
Personally, I believe it leaves us with a call to action to keep bridging that gap. To stop racism in the workplace (or schools or sport), we need continual action and reflection – training, structural change, listening to diverse voices – not just one-off “tick-a-box” action. Not just to talk about where racism occurs, but to take action to reduce racism and discriminatory behaviour that may come from bias, in whatever context we are in.
What are you doing to reduce racism?
